Emera owes its name to its advantageous geographical location, in the east of the "heel" of Italy, the Salento area. In actual fact, Emera is the Italian for Hemera, the name of the Ancient Greek goddess, personification of the day.
The name pays due tribute to the civilisation of Magna Græcia, the birthplace of ancient vines and wine-making in the region. Emera has completed its wine cellar, which is beneath ground level owing to a natural difference in height in the site and has modern equipment. It has moved to this new site from its historic headquarters in Guagnano, where the winery will continue to produce the Salice Salentino D.O.C. only. The new winery is surrounded by its vineyards and has been constructed inside the main building of a 16th century farmhouse, which is currently being renovated. |
Furthermore, it benefits from the proximity with the Casino Nitti vineyards, the majority of which - more than 30 ha - are cultivated by Casino Nitti itself. The winery and vineyards are located in the western-most part of the Salento area, in the Pulsano district. The climate there in the hottest months is scorching but mitigated by continual soft breezes and mild in the winter months, allowing the precious grapes to be enhanced with complex, intense aromas that are then transferred to the wines. Together with its staff, Emera is mapping out the road towards a "new day" in a land suffused with light. The company is recovering the know-how and skills of an ancient winery and supporting them with the most advanced technology to produce wines with an intense and robust flavour of local varietals, including Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia, as well as international varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and others besides
